Santorini Island Tour - Half Day Tour approx 4 hours

You will be met by your English-speaking guide upon disembarkation from the ship, at the bottom of the cable car at the Old Port of Fira. Our lovely tour starts with a scenic drive through the plains of Santorini to picturesque Oia, the crowning glory of peace and tranquility.

We then stop at one of the famous wineries to enjoy a wine tasting tour of the fine wines produced on the island. Our final stop is Fira, the islands capital town.

The island used to be circular, but a massive volcanic explosion around 3,500 years ago blew out the centre of the island. (Many people attribute the decline of Minoan civilization on Crete to this cataclysmic eruption. High cliffs jutting into the sea are all that's left of the crater rim.

The surrounding islands are the remains of the sides of the crater, and the sea has filled in the gaps, forming a beautiful bay. Sunsets on the island are particularly striking; all the restaurants and bars in Fira face west over the sunken volcano and the Aegean Sea.

The building was rediscovered in the late 19 th Century by Lazartis from Smyrna based on the vision of a German nun. The site is officially declared a shrine of the Roman Catholic Church and visited by Pope Paul VI in 1967, Pope John Paul II in 1979, and Pope Benedict XVI in 2007.

The Terrace Houses (Villas) on Curetes street belonged to the rich people of Ephesus. Many of them were three-storied and had peristyles surrounded by rooms without windows but included frescoes and mosaics of mythological scenes. Some of the frescoes were scenes from the comedies of Menander and the tragedies of Euripides. They were luxuriously furnished private houses with fountains and central heating. Between the street and houses was a portico with a mosaic floor, behind which were shops.

The Celsus Library is a Roman mausoleum and library built in the early 2 nd Century AD. The Library of Celsus was commissioned by the Julius as a mausoleum for his father, Roman governor of the Asian Provinces. It is one of the most beautifully reconstructed buildings in Ephesus, it has become an icon of the ancient city. The Great Theatre dates to the Hellenistic period. It is one of the most impressive buildings in Ephesus which has a capacity of 25,000 seats. 2024 Agios Nikolaos Local Highlights Option - 4 Hours - Provided by Travelive

Guests will enjoy a pre-arranged sightseeing itinerary with a Private Car and Guide to explore the following destination highlights.

Leaving the port, begin your journey driving by the coastal area of Agios Nikolaos city. This route covers an interesting part of the northeastern axis of the island. Passing through the very well-known resort area of Elounda, your first stop is a small fishing village called Plaka. From the small port of the village, you will board a boat and, in a few minutes, reach the historic small island of Spinalonga.

Spinalonga is an arid and barren rocky islet with an area of 8.5 hectares lying at the mouth of the natural port of Elounda. Due to its strategic location, it was fortified and served a variety of roles and purposes over the centuries. In antiquity, the islet was walled to protect the ancient city of Olous. In 1903, the Cretan State established a leper colony on the island. After the leper colony closed in 1957, the islet remained desolate and uninhabited. Spinalongas use as a place of confinement for lepers, who experienced the reality of death in isolation and desertion, had stigmatized it.

Upon return from Spinalonga Island, continue your tour to the island’s quieter and authentic hinterland. Through the nearby mountainous area, you will find the village of Fourni. Fourni village is in the homonymous fertile plain (polje) at an altitude of 320m. Visitors often come across houses of Venetian architecture, proof of the area’s long history. The area has dozens of chapels and Monasteries, most of them from the 16 th and 17 th Centuries. Enjoy a stroll in the village or a treat in a typical local café (kafenion). As you continue further inland, you will drive through the agricultural small town of Neapoli, reaching the main national road, and returning to Agios Nikolaos Port.

Included:

  • Private Luxury Sedan with English-Speaking guide and driver for 4 hours
  • Entrance fees for listed sights

  • Bottled water in the vehicle

Excluded:

  • Cost of meals and refreshments other than bottled water

Delos island tour approx 4 hours
Delos, once a Sacred Island, is the legendary birthplace of the Sun God Apollo and his twin sister Artemis.  Its religious significance coupled with a good harbour and strategic location on the Aegean trade routes enabled Delos to flourish for 500 years.   Today, the only remaining inhabitants are its treasured ruins and their caretakers.
Visit the marbled streets of the Agora and Sacred Way, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the theatre, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods and the Sacred Mount Cynthus.  View the remains of a Hellenistic Quarter with its harbours, water houses and luxurious villas, including the Houses of Cleopatra, the Dolphin, the Masks and the House of Dionyssos. Marvel at the spectacular Avenue of the Lions, where five proud Naxian marble beasts from the 7th Century BC crouch, vigilant guardians of the Sacred Lake, which stands dry today. A small museum on the island displays artefacts from the site.

Tips: Wear flat, comfortable walking shoes, there is a lot of walking over cobbled paths. Carry a cold bottle of water with you on hot days, wear lots of sunscreen and preferably a hat, as there is no shade on the island
